Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has strongly opposed the proposed Social Media Bill, 2081, calling it fundamentally flawed and saying it will not be passed in its current form. Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Thursday, Thapa said the bill reflects a control-oriented mindset and stems from a government that is afraid of social media.

He emphasized that the issue of regulating social media is crucial for every future prime minister, but warned that the current bill is based on a misguided concept. “This bill is objectionable. We will not let it move forward as it stands,” Thapa stated firmly.

Highlighting the role of digital platforms in modern life, he said, “The current Gen Z generation cannot imagine a time without the internet. Social media is not just a platform—it is an opportunity that can be used both constructively and destructively.”

Thapa concluded by asserting that social media has become an inseparable part of everyday life, and any regulation must respect its importance in democratic discourse rather than suppress it.
